Sea Mills Archaeology Research Team - SMART
In 2009, Bristol City Council archaeological officers and Bristol Museum & Art Gallery curators invited members of Bristol and Avon Archaeological Society (BAAS) to join a project team that would reassess material from the Roman town of Abona at Sea Mills in Bristol.
The team’s initial brief was to synthesise and catalogue material in the museum stores; collect information on objects discovered by people living in the area; and gather new material from sites in Sea Mills. Once they had achieved this, the group were inspired to continue on their own and created the Sea Mills Archaeological Research Team, or SMART. Their recent work focuses on the excavation and post-excavation of the Sea Mills allotment site, where a considerable amount of Roman material has been discovered. Bristol Museum & Art Gallery curators as well as our Finds Liaison Officer have facilitated finds identification sessions, finds and archive recording sessions and co-organised outreach events, including an open day for the Festival of British Archaeology. |
